Art stories everywhere! I’m having lunch between classes in downtown Hazleton and was drawn to Sophia Byorek’s “Cypress,” which reminds me of the gorgeous Carmel coast (CA). The NYC born-artist lived in West Hazleton most of her life and owned the Knotty Pine Restaurant with her husband for decades before her death in 2017. Her paintings, for which she won numerous awards, decorated that restaurant and inspired the interior design (Deb Stone) of The Pines, where enlargements of Byorek’s works now hang in tribute to the artist. 🤓❤️
Google identified these as Black Locust, an invasive tree that’s moved up from the South. Elsewhere, sources suggested they probably aren’t responsible for the tree pollen that’s caused the high alert for allergies. It seemed to me there are more Black Locusts this year but maybe I’m imagining that.
Bring your plants in so the frost doesn’t get them, they said.
I love the challenge of making a meal using what I have in the house when it feels like there aren’t enough groceries. Today: green apple and slivered almond tabbouleh with leftover parsley and mint that grew back from last year’s garden. Also, air fryer chili garlic tofu is my favorite recipe find of 2023. Yum!
For the student who thought it was odd that I take walks in the cemetery. What a lovely day it’s cleared up to be! 🌞
Our magnolias bloomed early this year …
